CRV Recycling

WHY RECYCLE BEVERAGE CONTAINERS?

FOR CASH!! Redemption Centers now pay 5¢ for containers less than 24 ounces, 10¢ for containers 24 ounces and larger, and 25¢ for boxes, bladders, or pouches containing wine or liquor with the California Refund Value (CRV) mark on the label.

FOR ECONOMY! When you remove beverage containers from your trash, you save some of the cost of disposal of material you no longer want.

FOR THE FUTURE! The more resources we keep out of landfills, the longer our landfills can perform. It costs communities millions of dollars to start new landfills, all money that comes from your tax dollars. It is very important to the local economy to conserve landfill space.

FOR THE ENVIRONMENT Would you rather go camping in the landfill or in the forest? If we recycle, we minimize landfill impacts on watersheds and habitats in our region.

FOR AMERICA’S ENERGY BUDGET Recycling one aluminum can saves enough energy to run your television for three hours! It only takes a small fraction of the energy to make new cans or bottles from old ones as it does to mine and process fresh raw materials. This is true for steel, aluminum, glass, paper, and for most other metals in addition to California Refund Value (CRV) containers. Every bit that gets recycled keeps energy costs down and minimizes pollution associated with manufacturing and mining.

FOR JOBS According to studies conducted by the U.C. Berkeley School of Management that were funded by the California Integrated Waste Management Board, recycling creates more jobs than any other option for managing solid waste. People find jobs sorting, processing, transporting, buying, selling, and re-manufacturing recycled products. Recycling encourages entrepreneurship and helps employ many people with limited job skills.
