Finding Pet-Friendly Housing
Moving with pets can be a difficult process, but below are some resources to help search for pet friendly housing.
Tips to Help Your Search:
-
Give yourself plenty of time to find a new place to live! Start searching six weeks prior to your planned move if possible.
-
Focus on places that allow pets. Make sure you understand the pet-keeping guidelines and any resident requirements. It’s important to know up front what is expected of you.
-
Permission is needed for all types of pets, not just dogs. Don’t assume cats, caged pets or outdoor animals will be permitted.
-
Create a pet resume. Documentation showing you are a responsible pet owner can be helpful when searching for a new place. Resumes might include veterinary records, training records, or reference letters from pet sitters. Find more information about pet resumes here.
-
Get it in writing. Once you’ve obtained permission, get that permission and any financial requirements in writing. Comprehensive rental agreements protect people, property and the pets themselves.
-
Be honest. Don’t try to sneak your pet into any rental property. Trouble and heartache come when tenants are found with unauthorized pets
